Postdoctoral Scholar Research Associate


Job Summary

The Mumenthaler lab seeks a talented postdoc who is capable of working with a diverse team to develop and apply innovative technologies to cancer target discovery. The successful applicant will develop cutting-edge preclinical models (e.g. organoids and organ-on-chips) to investigate tumor microenvironment interactions impacting colorectal cancer progression. Specifically, the candidate will integrate live-cell confocal imaging and “omics”-based analyses to characterize an ex vivo model of primary human colorectal cancer. This model will serve as a platform to (1) provide new insights into the significance of the physical and cellular microenvironment on tumor progression and (2) test specific therapeutic modalities that focus on disrupting tumor-stromal interactions to prevent or delay tumor progression. Expertise in primary and 3D cell culture, confocal imaging, immunostaining, qPCR, western blotting, genome editing, and next generation sequencing are essential. This position involves the design and documentation of experiments, detailed record-keeping, and weekly presentations to supervisory staff. Good communication and writing skills are essential.

Job Requirements

Candidates should have a PhD degree in molecular/cellular biology, biomedical engineering or other relevant discipline. Applicants with training in advanced mammalian tissue culture techniques and live cell microscopy are encouraged to apply. Job Accountabilities
Develop and integrate ontologies and other semantic standards in our data platforms

We are seeking an Associate Computational Biologist with a strong interest in cancer biology to complement our Quantitative Biology, Bioinformatics and Biostatistics team. In this role, you will develop and implement robust and effective data management and analytical solutions to answer biological questions as part of a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, experimentalists, computer scientists, engineers, statisticians, and biologists. You will collaboratively formulate and execute plans for data analysis, management, and visualization to produce rigorous, reproducible insights while ensuring the quality and integrity of the data throughout its lifecycle. Specific responsibilities

The Lawrence J. Ellison Institute is seeking a talented and passionate Research Lab Specialist II to join its team. As part of the Ellison Institute, the Mumenthaler lab is focused on evaluating the role of the tumor microenvironment in cancer progression. Our team is a diverse group of innovative and talented professionals who use organs-on-chips as a cutting-edge technology to investigate mechanisms of colorectal cancer disease progression and evaluate potential treatment approaches. As part of the Mumenthaler lab, the candidate will perform advanced tissue culture techniques, working with 3D organoids and a microfluidic organ-on-chip platform, to establish a patient-specific colorectal cancer chip. The candidate will perform various techniques, including imaging, immunostaining and ELISAs, to validate the tissue structure and function of the model is physiologically relevant. The candidate will work closely with the Ellison Institute’s Cell Line Team, who has developed and characterized a biobank of patient-derived organoids, and the Biomimetic Models Team, who has established organs-on-chip platforms, to carry out the proposed tasks. This work will provide the basis for a personalized chip platform for patients with colorectal cancer so that the pathogenic mechanisms related to specific tissue elements can be elucidated and potential therapies evaluated.

The Research Lab Specialist II is responsible for performing 3D cell culture, imaging, immunostaining, and ELISAs. They will also prepare technical reports, develop protocols, and perform quantitative analyses.

Be part of a growing cancer research lab that consists of a high energy multidisciplinary team including clinicians, biologists, physicists, computer scientists and engineers focused on cancer and cancer treatments. You will help facilitate important cancer research by making certain scientists have the reagents, tools and organized work-space. You will autoclave tools glassware and water, maintain common workspaces, help restock supplies in our labs and tissue culture facilities, provide backup for our experienced Laboratory Assistant and Lab Manager as well as the scientists and Director of Operations when needed. From time to time, you’ll work on special projects along with your routine work schedule. This is a great opportunity to work in a dynamic fast paced research lab.

As part of the Ellison Institute, the Building Operations team is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Institute, including but not limited to building and lab facilities, maintenance/engineering and compliance with regulatory agencies. The Ellison Institute is made up of a diverse group of innovative and talented professionals who work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment that provides ongoing support to research projects, patient care, lab research and administrative operations. The primary role of the Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) Senior Manager is to oversee the development and implementation of health and safety guidelines for the Institute. This includes ensuring environmental and lab safety and compliance with various regulatory agencies.
The EH&S Senior Manager is responsible for performing the following job duties:

     • Provide professional EH&S expertise and leadership for the Institute
     • Identify and assess risks throughout the Institute and develop and implement robust control measures to minimize accidents
     • Collaborate with Directors to lead and manage EH&S programs and systems to maximize worker safety and minimize environmental harm and achieve compliance with all applicable CAL/OSHA regulations, and US EPA and California environmental regulatory agencies
     • Coach, lead, mentor and develop managers, supervisors and employees to achieve EH&S objectives and to support individual employee EH&S knowledge and development

     • Unpacks and checks goods received against purchase orders or invoices, maintains records of received goods and rejects unsatisfactory items as necessary
     • Lifts heavy items and may operate a forklift. Prepares and maintains records of merchandise shipped. Posts weights and shipping charges and prepares goods for final shipment
     • Examines, stocks and distributes materials to inventory locations around building
     • Will be trained to receive, handle and distribute some chemicals and frozen material
